Mint Condition, the final and title track of the record, which came out one year ago today. I won’t call this a fun fact but it is the truth…

This song was inspired by my Mema (that’s Virginian for grandmother) and she passed away the summer before this album came out. We were incredibly close. I didn’t want to have to play this song on the release tour but it was the title track so there was no way around it.

Having to sing this song has every show for the last year has the most difficult and most beautiful way to grieve her. It took me a long time to not get completely choked up during the lines “I might have to learn to live here alone but I’ll love you through ash or through stone.“ It had taken on a completely new meaning. I actually started full on crying on stage at my hometown release show when I had to play this song in front of my family for the first time since we lost her.

Looking back on this year, I am so grateful for the opportunity to focus my energy and think of her every night on so many beautiful stages and in so many new places. During this song, I always felt emotions rising but over time, the sadness turned to joy, and performing song was less about grief and more of a celebration. If you have a copy of the record, you’ll see that it is dedicated to her, just as this song will be each time I play it.
