Kelsey Waldon "Backwater Blues" from her album No Regular Dog
Directed by Curtis Wayne Millard

I wrote the song "Backwater Blues" from personal experience, and something I lived every season of my life growing up. It was inevitable that one day I would write a song about the backwater. To everyone I know down in the Ohio River bottoms, people will ask them why they still live there in flood country? The answer is because it is home. Just like when people outside of the state ask "why do they still live in hollers by the river and creeks"? It is home and most people simply can’t move. They don’t have the means or money to do it, and the reasons why are mostly out of their control. The message is one of empathy and the storyline is one of heartbreak, except this time Mother Nature is doing the breaking, over and over again. She is upset for good reason, but the character in the story has a simple plea. I think most anyone, outside of the state and all around this world, can relate…especially in these times we are living in.

Backwater Blues (LYRICS)
Be kind to me
Ain’t got nobody, ain’t got no one to look after me
I didn’t choose this life but it chose me
The more the tide rolls in
Time rolls away from me
On a river bank
Ain’t never taken anything that don’t belong to me
But when she decides to return she’ll take everything she sees
A copperhead might strike you dead
Before you’ve seen anything
Oh mama, seems like the water’s been 10 feet high
And I just don’t understand why it makes me cry
If I can keep it together until the spring
When that damn river runs dry
I’ll count my blessings, just like the stars
That are in the sky
When it all comes down
I’ll be here to clean up and claim my ground
You wouldn’t know mother nature’s power
If she never made a sound
I can’t be too proud, she’s got me cryin’ out loud
Oh mama, seems like the water’s been 10 feet high
And I just don’t understand why it makes me cry
If I can keep it together until the spring
When that damn river runs dry
I’ll count my blessings, just like the stars
That are in the sky
I’ll count my blessings, just like the stars
That are in the sky

With four critically-acclaimed albums under her belt, Kelsey Waldon has forged a strong presence in the Country and Americana scene. Her uncut lyricism and natural country sensibility recall her upbringing in Monkey's Eyebrow, Kentucky. After moving to Nashville, she cultivated a loyal following through frequent touring across the U.S. and two critically acclaimed albums. Her persistence paid off when, on stage at the Grand Ole Opry, John Prine invited Kelsey to join his Oh Boy Records family. In 2019, Kelsey released White Noise / White Lines on Prine's Oh Boy Records. An unflinching work that details Waldon's life, hopes, and pains, the album earned her a nomination for the Emerging Act of the Year Award at the 2020 Americana Awards.
